Say What?

Hello,

this assignment seemed very confusing when I read it and then I remembered making up a secret language with my friends. So instead of seeing this as an assignment, I saw it as a puzzle and code between friends. Much more fun this way :-)

Let me know, what you think I am trying to tell you here :

G A G T A C C A A G G G A A C G G T A G T G G C A C C C G C T T G T A G A G C C C C A G T T C G A T C G A G

Best,
Andrea

  1. Hey there Andrea,

It took me forever to do this HW assignment! but for the most part I understood your sentence. I think you may have made a mistake on the very last word though.

I did it 3 times and got this every time:
I want to sit and study the confusing anthropology book about Natural Selection and tooth...
tooth is whats throwing me off.

  2. Hey Jennifer.
So sorry. That last one was a typo.

Here is the answer key with the correction.
    G A G ----- useless
    T A C --- AUG = start codon
    C A A - GUU - I
    G G G - CCC - WANT
    A A C - UUG - TO
    G G T - C C A - SIT
    A G T - U C A - AND
    G G C - C C G -STUDY
    A C C - U G G - THE
    C G C - G C G - CONFUSING
    T T G - A A C - ANTHROPOLOGY
    T A G -A U C - BOOK
    A G C - U C G - ABOUT
    C C C - GGG - NATURAL SELECTION
    A G T - U C A - AND
    T C G- A G C - TOOTH meant to be TCC - AGG - PROTEINS
    A T C --- UAG = stop codon
    G A G --- useless

Again, I am totally sorry. I made so sure that I would not mix up A and U and messed up. Thanks for finding the error and letting me know, instead of just writing "as is". Truly appreciate it.

    Best,
    Andrea

  3. Interesting! I actually assumed the last word was actually "teeth" (there was leeway on word form change to fit the meaning) which is not that unusual for anthropologists who do spend a lot of time studying teeth. Proteins obviously works, but I'm happy with either.

    Good code and good decode.

Here is my decode for reference:

    DNA: GAGTACCAAGGGAACGGTAGTGGCACCCGCTTGTAGAGCCCCAGTTCGATCGAG
    RNA: CUCAUGGUUCCCUUGCCAUCACCGUGGGCGAACAUCUCGGGGUCAAGCUAGCUC
Triplets: AUG GUU CCC UUG CCA UCA CCG UGG GCG AAC AUC UCG GGG UCA AGC UAG
(start) I want to sit and study confusing anthropology book(s) about natural selection and (teeth). (stop)

  5. Hey Jennifer,
thanks for the compliment. This was a very detailed work and I was too confident that I would not mix up C and G, as that was too easy (LOL) and made sure I don't bring a U into my DNA.
Professor Rodriguez, we can go with your assumption as well, as I would not have made a mistake then :-).
